Drug Uses

Amoxicillin is a penicillin class antibiotic. It is used to treat bacterial infections in general, an may also be used to treat other infections.

How Taken

Amoxicillin is to be taken by mouth. It is formulated in capsule, tablets, liquid and drops. Amoxicillin is to be taken exactly as prescribed. Liquid forms have to be well shaken before usage. Drops for children may be mixed with milk, juics, water or other cold liquid. Tablets need to be cruched or chewed before swallowing for full benefits, and capsules need to be swallowed whole with full glass of water. All of Amoxicillin need to be used in single treatment period, even if the symptoms pass.

Warnings/Precautions

Amoxicillin can't be taken without consultation with doctor if allergic reaction to penicillin occurs. Additionally any liver or kidney disease need to be reported to doctor. Amoxicillin is not expected to cause harm to an unborn baby, but pregnancy or plans to become pregnant during treatment should be reported to doctor. Additionally breast feeding should be reported to doctor, although Amoxicillin isn't harmful to a nursing baby.

Missed Dose

Missed dose can be taken as soon as remembered, unless it's about time for next scheduled dose. Double dosage is not recommended, unless specified otherwise by your doctor.

Possible Side Effects

If experiencing bloody diarrhea or abdominal cramps during treatment you should notify your doctor and/or seek emergency medical attention. Also when experiencing allergic reaction, or seizures, or unusual bleeding doctor assistance is needed. When experiencing other less serious side effects not mentioned above your doctor need to be notified about it.

Storage

Amoxicillin need to be kept in a dry, dark and safe place away from the reach of children, out of bathroom, kitchen sink. Liquid forms need to be stored in refrigerator, since heat may cause the medicine to break, however the medicine need to be kept from freezing. Expired medicine need to be thrown off.

Overdose

When overdose of Amoxicillin occurs it may cause muscle spasms, pain or twitching, loss of feeling in the fingers, confusion or eventually coma. Emergency medical attention is needed when suspecting overdose.

More Information

If you experience severe or bloody diarrhea during treatment you should contact your doctor. Even if you begin to feel better you should use all of the Amoxicillin that has been prescribe to you. Amoxicillin may decrease effectiveness of birth control pills, so second method of birth control should be used while taking Amoxicillin to ensure protection from unintended pregnancy.
