Drug Uses

Claritin-D is a medicament used to relieve symptoms of allergy and hay fever. It is used to relieve with sneezing, itchy nose, and tearing eyes. This medicament is in class of antihistamines, which means that it is blocking histamine production, a substance that body produces, and which cause allergy symptoms. Claritin-D cause less drowsiness than other antihistamines.

How Taken

Claritin-D has two forms - one is to be taken twice a day (every 12 hours, by mouth) and the other is 24 hour tablet - one tablet daily, with a full glass of water. Tablet should be swallowed whole, not meant to be chewed, and a 24 hour tablet is to be taken with full glass of water.

Warnings/Precautions

Claritin-D should be used with caution when suffering from lung disease such as asthma. If you suffer from such conditions then you should consult your doctor before starting the treatment. Other conditions that need to be consulted with doctor are diabetes, problems of thyroidical nature, glaucoma or any kidney, heart or liver disease. Any conditions mentioned above require dose regulations. FDA category B for Claritin-D specifies that it is safe for an unborn baby. Breast feeding of baby should be consulted with doctor before starting treatment, because it passes into breast milk, and may affect nursing baby. Claritin-D is not approved to take by children under 12 years of age.

Missed Dose

When dose missed, Claritin-D should be used as soon as you remember. When the time to next dose is near missed dose should be skipped and usual dosing should be resumed. It's not recommended to double the dose to catch up.

Possible Side Effects

Claritin-D shouldn't cause any serious side effects. When encountering such you should consult your doctor immediately. Possible side effects include allergic reactions such as difficult breathing, swelling of upper air-passages, irregular heartbeat or seizures. Less serious side effects may eventually occur - such as dizziness, headache, insomnia or nervousness. If you experience those problems, or any other bothersome side effects not mentioned in here you should consult your doctor.

Storage

Claritin-D should be protected from light and stored in a dry place in temperatures varying between 15-25°C (59-77°F).

Overdose

Claritin-D overdose symptoms are headache, drowsiness, vomiting, increased thirst and weakness.

More Information

If experiencing dizziness, while treatment with Claritin-D, you should avoid driving, operating heavy machinery or performing other hazardous activities.
