Drug Uses
Elavil is used for relieving from the symptoms of depression. It's mainly use is for endogenous depression.
How Taken
Elavil can be taken with or without food one to four times a day. Elavil is meant to be taken exactly as prescribed. Elavil shouldn't be put off without consultation with doctor, especially when large doses were taken for a long time. Full effects of Elavil are felt after few weeks of treatment.
Warnings/Precautions
Your doctor need to be notified of any liver, kidney, lungs, thyroid, stomach or intestinal problems. You may not be able to take Elavil if you had heart attack in the last 6 weeks, if you suffer from high blood pressure, enlarged prostate or similar diseases. Elavil may be harmful to an unborn baby. When breast-feeding consultation with your doctor is required. If you are over 60 years of age you may experience side effects, such as drowsiness, dizziness, unsteadiness and low blood pressure.
Missed Dose
When dose missed, Elavil should be used as soon as you remember. When the time to next dose is near missed dose should be skipped and usual dosing should be resumed. It's not recommended to double the dose to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
Due to nature of this medicament side effects cannot be fully anticipated. If any side effects occur, or continue to arise or become bothersome you should inform your doctor as soon as possible. Older adults may experience rapid heartbeat, constipation, blurred vision or confusion. Side effects may include abnormal movement, anxiety, black tongue, breast development in males, breast enlargement, coma, confusion, constipation, delusions, difficulty in speech, dilation of pupils, disorientation, disturbed concentration, dizziness, drowsiness, high blood pressure, high fever, inability to sleep, increased or decreased sex drive, irregular heartbeat, lack of coordination, seizures, weight gain or loss, yellowed eyes and skin. Effects may increase when treatment is rapidly stopped.
Storage
Elavil tablets should be stored in well-closed container, protected from light, in temperatures not higher than 30°C (86°F).
Overdose
Overdose critical effect include diarhythmia, hypotension, convulsions and in some cases coma. This class of drugs may cause death on overdosage.
More Information
If you experience drowsiness or dizziness you should avoid driving or operating heavy machinery. Alcohol may increase the effect of dizziness and drowsiness, so it should be used with caution. You shouldn't stop using Elavil immediately before consulting a doctor, because of unpleasant side effects that may occur, such as nausea.
