Drug Uses
Famvir is an prescription medicament formulated as tablets to be taken by mouth. It is used for treatment of recurrent genital herpes, suppression of recurrent genital herpes, treatment of recurrent genital herpes and cold sores in HIV-infected patients and shingles.
How Taken
Famvir can be prescribed for episodic treatment, in this case it should be used as prescribed, usually one 125-mg pill, twice a day, for 5 days. It can also be prescribed for suppressive treatment when experiencing frequent or severe outbreaks, usual dosage in this case is one 250-mg pill, twice a day, for up to 1 year to suppress the genital herpes virus. It can also be used to treat patients with HIV virus. In this case Famvir is the only medicament for treating genital and simplex herpes. Usual dose in this case is 500 mg of Famvir, twice a day, for 7 days. This medication can be taken with or without food.
Warnings/Precautions
If you are allergic to Denavir (penciclovir) you are most likely be allergic to Famvir also, and you should consult your doctor. Famvir shouldn't be used with certain kidney diseases or while pregnant, as it may cause damage to an unborn baby.
Missed Dose
When dose is missed you can take it as soon as remembered, unless it's about time for another scheduled dose. Do not double up doses to catch up.
Possible Side Effects
If you experience an allergic reaction to Famvir stop taking it and seek medical attention. You may eventually encounter other, less serious side effects, such as nausea or vomiting, a headache, diarrhea, dizziness, tingling in your hands or feet, or itching. Consult your doctor when experiencing those.
Storage
Famvir should be stored out of the reach of children, in temperatures between 15°C and 30°C (59°F - 86°F).
Overdose
Overdose of Famvir may cause seizures, hallucinations and kidney damage. When suspecting overdose you should seek emergency medical attention.
More Information
Treatment should be started as soon as first symptoms (tingling, burning) are noticed. All of the Famvir should be taken, even if feeling better before the end of the treatment. Avoid infected areas come in contact with other people, as the infection is contagious and you may infect other people while treatment. You should frequently wash your hands to prevent transmission.
