Drug Uses
Fluoxetine is used in treatment of depressions, disorders, bulimia, premenstrual disorders and many other disorders. This drug is a psychotrope.
How Taken
Fluoxetine is to be taken twice a day, it should be taken regularly to be fully effective. Best results are achieved when making a habit of taking the pill at the same time as some other daily activity. It may take about 4 weeks before relief, but effects last up to nine months after three months treatment.
Warnings/Precautions
If you are recovering from a heart attack, or have liver disease you shouldn't take this medication, unless prescribed by doctor. Fluoxetine may cause drowsiness, so driving and operating heavy machinery or any hazardous activity that require full mental alertness is not recommended. During treatment you may eel dizzy or light headed and fainting while getting up fast is possible. If getting up slowly doesn't help you should notify your doctor about it. Appetite may be decreased while taking Fluoxetine, weight loss may occur. Fluoxetine effect on pregnancy is unknown, so you should let your doctor know if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during the treatment. This medication passes into breast milk, so breastfeeding is not recommended.
Missed Dose
When missed a dose it may be taken the same day. If not remembered until next day you should skip it and continue to take Fluoxetine on a regular schedule. It's not recommended to take two doses at once.
Possible Side Effects
Due to nature of this medication side effects cannot be fully anticipated. Possible side effects may include: abnormal dreams, dizziness, flu-like symptoms, impotence, insomnia, itching, loss of appetite, nausea, nervousness, rash, sinusitis, sleepiness, sore throat, sweating, tremors, vomiting, weakness or yawning. You should let your doctor know when such effects occur. Children and adolescents, may suffer from less common side effects, such as: agitation, excessive menstrual bleeding, frequent urination, hyperactivity, mania, nosebleeds, personality changes, and thirst.
During therapy various examples of many other side effects were notified. Your doctor should be notified if you experience any side effect that isn't mentioned here.
Storage
Fluoxetine should be stored in a dry place at 20-25 degrees C (68-77 F).
Overdose
Overdosing of Fluoxetine may be fatal, overdose symptoms include nausea, rapid heartbeat, sleepiness. In difficult cases of overdose may occur coma, delirium, fainting, high fever, irregular heartbeat or low blood pressure. Medical attention should be seeked immediately when suspecting overdose.
More Information
MAO inhibitors shouldn't be taken for at least 2-5 weeks after discontinuation of Fluoxetine treatment. This medication hasn't been studied extensively, so you should check with your physician periodically. When taking other medications you should consult with your pharmacist or doctor.
