Drug Uses
Lipitor is an treatment used simultaneously with diet change to reduce the amount of cholesterol and certain fat substances in your veins. Lowering your cholesterol and fat level helps to prevent heart diseases, chest pains and heart attacks.
How Taken
Lipitor is formulated as a mouth taken tablet. It can be taken with or without food once a day. Your doctor may start treating you with Lipitor in a low dose and gradually increasing it. Lipitor needs to be combined with low fat low cholesterol diet.
Warnings/Precautions
If you have liver disease, chronic muscular disease, require major surgery or have a blood disorder you should notify your doctor before taking Lipitor. FDA category for this drug is X, which means that it causes birth defects, therefore it shouldn't be used during pregnancy. Since it is not known if Lipitor passes into breast milk, you should consult your doctor if breast feeding a baby.
Missed Dose
Missed dose may be taken as soon as you remember about it, however if it's about time for next dose then you should not double up the dose to catch up with the schedule, unless directed otherwise by your doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Side effects from Lipitor are not common, however if you experience the following side effects that are severe or long lasting then you should notify your doctor - gas, stomach pain or cramps, diarrhea, constipation, heartburn, headache, blurred vision, dizziness, rash or itching and upset stomach. Following symptoms can be potentially dangerous and you should call your doctor immediately: muscle pain, tenderness and muscle cramps or weakness with or without a fever.
Storage
This medication need to be kept in in the container it came in, tightly closed, and out of reach of children. Lipitor need to be stored at room temperature and away from excess heat and moisture. Expired medication should be thrown away.
Overdose
Symptoms of a Lipitor overdose are unknown. However if suspecting overdose seek emergency medical attention.
More Information
Using of alcohol while Lipitor therapy may have serious consequences on your liver. Additionally grapefruit and it's juice may interact with Lipitor. The interaction could lead to potentially dangerous effects.
