Drug Uses
Nexium is a treatment for gastroesophageal reflux disease. Nexium is used to treat the symptoms of GERD, allow the esophagus to heal, and prevent further damage to the esophagus. It is also used with other medications to prevent stomach ulcers. Nexium works by decreasing the amount of acid made in the stomach.
How Taken
Nexium is formulated as a long lasting capsule to take by mouth. Usually it is taken once a day, one hour before meal. The capsules need to be taken whole, not split or chewed nor crushed. If the capsule cannot be swallowed you can mix the contents of the capsule with some sauce.
Warnings/Precautions
Your doctor need to be notified of any liver disease. Nexium has FDA category B, so it should not harm an unborn baby, however if you are pregnant, or planning to become pregnant or nursing a baby you should notify your doctor before treatment. If you have a penicillin hypersensitivity Nexium may cause anaphylactic reactions. Additionally pseudo membranous colitis has been reported with nearly all antibacterial agents, including clarithromycin and amoxicillin, and may range in severity from mild to life threatening. Therefore, it is important to consider this diagnosis in patients who present with diarrhea subsequent to the administration of antibacterial agents.
Missed Dose
If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as it is possible. If it's time for your next scheduled dose you should skip the missing one. Do not double up a dose unless otherwise directed by your doctor.
Possible Side Effects
Nexium side effects, such as headache, constipation, cough or diarrhea, will eventually go away as the treatment continues. However if they continue or become bothersome you should consult your doctor. You should immediately seek medical attention or contact with your doctor if any of those effects appear: throat pain, chest pain, severe stomach pain, or coffee-ground vomit. This may indicate an allergic reaction to Nexium. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor.
Storage
Nexium should be stored in a tightly closed container, at temperatures of 15 to 30°C (59 - 86°F).
Overdose
Drowsiness, shortness of breath, tremor, loss of coordination and seizures are the symptoms of Nexium overdose. You should then seek emergency medical attention.
