Drug Uses
Norvasc widens the blood vessels by blocking calcium channels, making it easier for the heart to pump blood. Norvasc is a treatment for high blood pressure and angina. It may be also used for other purposes not mentioned here.
How Taken
Norvasc should be taken once a day with food or liquid to avoid upset stomach. Consultation with doctor is needed when using salt substitutes containing potassium, and all directions regarding low salt or low potassium diet should be carefully followed.
Warnings/Precautions
Any liver disease or another disease of the heart or blood vessels, such as sick sinus syndrome, aortic stenosis, heart failure, low blood pressure, or coronary artery disease should be reported to your doctor before starting treatment with Norvasc. Influence that Norvasc has on a unborn baby is not known, and also it's not known if Norvasc passes into breast milk, so if you are pregnant, plan to become pregnant during treatment or breast feeding a baby you should consult your doctor.
Missed Dose
Missed dose may be taken as soon as you remember about it, however if it's about time for next dose then you should not double up the dose to catch up with the schedule.
Possible Side Effects
You should stop taking Norvasc and immediately consult your doctor if experiencing any of following side effects: an allergic reaction, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, chest pain, severe dizziness or fainting, psychosis, yellowing of the skin or eyes or swelling of the legs or ankles. It is more likely that following less serious side effects occur: fatigue or tiredness, headache, insomnia, vivid or abnormal dreams, flushing, abdominal pain, nausea, diarrhea, or constipation or increased or difficult urination. Other side effects can also occur when treating with Norvasc. You should let your doctor know about them if they are unusual or especially bothersome.
Storage
Bottles of Norvasc should be stored at controlled room temperature, 15-30°C (59° to 86°F), in tight, light resistant containers.
Overdose
Overdosage symptoms for Norvasc include dizziness, weakness, and chest pain, shortness of breath, fainting, unusually fast or slow heartbeat, coma, slurred speech, and confusion. It may lead to excessive peripheral vasodilatation with marked hypotension and possibly a reflex tachycardia.
More Information
You should let your doctor know about any liver disease or another disease of the heart or blood vessels such as sick sinus syndrome, aortic stenosis, heart failure, low blood pressure, or coronary artery disease. When over 65 years of age, you may be more likely to experience side effects from Norvasc.
