Drug Uses

Prevacid is used to treat and prevent stomach and intestinal ulcers, damage to the esophagus from stomach acid, and other conditions involving excessive stomach acid such as Zollinger-Ellison syndrome. It works by decreasing the amount of acid produced in the stomach. It may also be used for other purposed not mentioned here.

How Taken

Prevacid is formulated as long acting capsule to take by mouth. It is usually taken once a day, before a meal. Prevacid should be taken exactly as directed by doctor. The capsule can be swallowed whole, or opened and the contents mixed with some sauce. The granules should not be chewed or crushed. You should not stop taking Prevacid without consultation with a doctor.

Warnings/Precautions

Any liver disease need to be reported to doctor before taking Prevacid. This medication has FDA category B, which means that it should not cause harm to an unborn baby, but if you are pregnant, or plan to become pregnant you should consult your doctor before starting treatment. It isn't known if Prevacid passes into breast milk, so if you are breast feeding you should consult with your doctor.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose you should take it as soon as it is possible. If it's time for your next scheduled dose you should skip the missing one. Do not double up a dose.

Possible Side Effects

Allergic reaction to Prevacid is a reason to stop taking it and seek medical attention. Other serious side effects are not common. You may eventually experience some less common side effects, such as diarrhea, nausea, or abdominal pain, dizziness or headache. You should tell your doctor about those or any other side effects not mentioned above, which seems unusual or especially bothersome.

Storage

Prevacid should be stored away from moisture and heat at room temperature.

Overdose

Symptoms of overdose are not known. If suspecting overdose seek immediate medical attention.
