Drug Uses

Prozac is used in depression treatments, disorders, bulimia, premenstrual disorder and many other disorders.

How Taken

Prozac is usually taken once or twice a day. Full effect is achieved when taken regularly. It may take up to four weeks before any relief, but it's effects last up to nine months after three months treatment. For obsessive disorder it may take up to 5 weeks to achieve any benefit.

Warnings/Precautions

This medicament shouldn't be taken when recovering from heart attack or with liver disease, unless told so by your doctor. Because of effects of using Prozac driving or operating heavy machinery or participating in any activity that requires full mental alertness is not recommended. Getting up from lying or sitting position may cause fainting. If slowly standing up doesn't help to this problem then you should consult your doctor. Prozac should be used with caution when you have history of seizures. All of your medical conditions should be discussed with your doctor before starting treatment with Prozac. This medicament can cause decreased appetite and weight loss, especially in depressed people who are already underweight and in those with bulimia. If you notice changes in your weight or appetite, you should consult with your doctor. Prozac's effect on pregnancy haven't been studied, so if you are pregnant or plan to become pregnant during treatment you should consult with your doctor before starting taking Prozac. This medication passes to breast milk, so feeding with breast is not recommended when using Prozac.

Missed Dose

You should take missed dose as soon as you remember, but not if it's near time to take next dose, unless told so by doctor.

Possible Side Effects

Your doctor need to be notified and/or emergency medical treatment may be needed if you experience any of the following side effects: an allergic reaction, irregular heartbeat or pulse, low blood pressure, high blood pressure or chills or fever. The following less serious side effects should be reported to your doctor: headache, tremor, nervousness, or anxiety, nausea, diarrhea, dry mouth, or changes in appetite or weight, sleepiness or insomnia, or decreased sex drive, impotence, or difficulty having an orgasm. Other side effects may also occur. In that case you should let your doctor know about it, if it seems unusual or bothersome.

Storage

Prozac tabs should be stored in a dry place at 20-25°C (68-77 F).

Overdose

Overdose of Prozac may be fatal in consequences. In addition combining Prozac with some other drugs may cause symptoms of overdose. Medical attention is needed when suspecting overdose of Prozac. Symptoms of overdose include nausea, rapid heartbeat, seizures, sleepiness and vomiting.

More Information

MAO inhibitors shouldn't be taken for at least 2-5 weeks after discontinuation of Fluoxetine treatment. This medication hasn't been studied extensively, so you should check with your physician periodically. When taking other medications you should consult with your pharmacist or doctor.
