Drug Uses

Tramadol is a general painkiller that works by decreasing brain perception of pain, and magnitude of the pain signal that is passed between the nerves. It is used to treat pains caused by surgery and chronic conditions such as cancer or joint pain, or sometimes for other use, as prescribed by your doctor.

How Taken

Tramadol needs to be taken exactly as prescribed, usual dosage is one tablet every four to six hours. Caution should be applied when using Tramadol for a longer time, since it may be habit forming.

Warnings/Precautions

If you have liver or kidney disease, or have any history of drug or alcohol dependence you should tell your doctor. It is not known if Tramadol can harm an unborn baby or is passed into breast milk, so you should consult your doctor if pregnant or breast feeding. Side effects of Tramadol are more likely to occur if you are over 75 years of age. Maximum daily dose of Tramadol in such cases is 300 mg. Tramadol is not recommended for use by children under 16 years of age.

Missed Dose

If you miss a dose, take it as soon as remembered, until it's near time for next dose. If so, skip the missed dose and resume your usual dosing schedule. Do not double-up dose to catch up.

Possible Side Effects

Side effects of Tramadol are not common, but they eventually may occur. Most frequent reports mention migraine, speech disorders and gastrointestinal bleeding, hepatitis, stomatitis, or liver failure. If any of these symptoms are severe or not passing you should notify your doctor. Other side effects that may also eventually occur include dizziness, headache, drowsiness, blurred vision, upset stomach, vomiting, and diarrhea. And the following side effects need to be reported to your doctor immediately: fast heartbeat, redness, swelling, and itching of the face, numbness or tingling of the hands and feet, difficulty breathing, changes in urination, seizures.

Storage

Tramadol should be stored in a tight container at temperatures of 15-30°C (59-86°F)

Overdose

If you experience difficulty breathing; shallow, weak breathing; and seizures that it may mean that you overdosed Tramadol. You should seek emergency medical help.

More Information

Using of alcohol while treatment with Tramadol may cause dangerous decrease in breathing and/ or liver problems. Since Tramadol may cause dizziness or drowsiness driving or operating heavy machinery should be avoided while using this medication. Avoid using of sleeping pills, tranquilizers, sedatives, and antihistamines, unless directed so by your doctor.
