Drug Uses

Triphasil is an contraceptive, commonly referred to as "the Pill", that is meant to be taken by mouth. It contains a mixture of two active semi-hormonal ingredients, levonorgestrel and ethinyloestradiol. This medicament is used to prevent pregnancy or to regulate your menstrual cycle.

How Taken

Triphasil is a three phase preparation pills that have to be taken exactly as prescribed to achieve maximum effectiveness. This pill is to be taken regular, in 24 hours intervals. It is dosed for 21 days per menstrual cycle - in phase one six brown pills, next five white tablets in phase two and then ten light-yellow tablets in third phase. Then there is a break in taking the tablets for seven days. It is recommended that Triphasil is taken at the same time of day, preferably at evening.

Warnings/Precautions

Smoking, especially heavy smoking (over 15 cigarettes a day), high blood pressure, diabetes, high cholesterol, clotting disorders, heart attack, cancer, or tumors may increase risks associated while using Triphasil. Certain antibiotics or anticonvulsants may decrease effectiveness of Triphasil. To prevent pregnancy, use an additional form of birth control until your next period. You should inform your doctor or pharmacist that you use Triphasil before taking any other medicine. If you develop problems with contact lenses you should contact your doctor. Triphasil may cause dark skin patches on your face. Exposure to the sun may make these patches darker. If patches develop, use a sunscreen or protective clothing when exposed to the sun, sunlamps, or tanning booths. Use of Triphasil won't protect you from sexually transmitted diseases, so additional protection should be used. If you are pregnant, or breast feeding you should consult your doctor, as Triphasil passes into breast milk and may cause a risk to your baby.

Missed Dose

Effectiveness of triphasil may be decreased if you happen to miss some pills, especially first few brown or last few light-yellow pills. If you miss one pill, then take it as soon as you remember. Next pill is to be taken normally, so it means that you will have to take two pills one day. You may become pregnant if you have sex in the next seven days after you missed a pill, to avoid it you have to use another birth control method. If you happen to miss more than one pill, then you should throw out the package and start a new one, unless you started taking pills on Sunday. If so then you should take one pill daily till Sunday and then throw the package off and start a new one. You may miss the period this month, but this is expected. However if you miss your period twice in a row then you might be pregnant.

Possible Side Effects

If effects such as dizziness, headache, lightheadedness, stomach upset, bloating, or nausea persist and increase then you should consult your doctor. Also if you experience depression, pains, shortness of breath weakness or tingling you should consult your doctor.
