Drug Uses
Yasmin is a custom birth control pill, which contains progestin hormone called drospirenone. As other contraceptives this one also doesn't protect against HIV infection and other sexually transmitted diseases.
How Taken
This contraceptive combines of a packet of 28 pills, 21 of them contain active ingredients ethinyl estradiol and drospirenon. And seven of them are reminder pills. They differ in color, and don't contain any hormone. Treatment needs to begin on first day of period, or on a first Sunday after period starts, even if bleeding continues. If your period starts on Sunday then you should start the same day. Additional method of birth control should be used if you have sex during the first seven days of beginning the treatment.
Warnings/Precautions
Yasmin increases the possibility for a stroke, heart attack, or blood clot, especially if you are a smoker. Before taking Yasmin, tell your doctor if you have diabetes; high cholesterol; gallbladder disease; migraines or other headaches; epilepsy; a history of depression; a history of scanty or irregular menstrual periods; smoke cigarettes; or need an extended period of bed rest due to surgery or illness. These pills have FDA category X, which means that they will defect an unborn baby. Hormonal changes during pregnancy have very serious effects on a developing baby. If you are breast feeding you should notify your doctor, since these pills decrease it's production.
Missed Dose
If you happen to miss one yellow pill, then take it as soon as you remember, and take next pill on schedule. Additional birth control is not necessary. However if you miss two pills in week one or two then you need to take two pills as you remember and two pills next day. Then continue to take pills as normal, and use additional birth control. If you miss two or more pills in the third week, then you should take the pills normally till Sunday if you started on Sunday, otherwise throw out the package and start a new pack the same day. You need to use additional birth control not to get pregnant. You may miss the period this month, but if you miss your period twice in a row then you may be pregnant.
Possible Side Effects
When treating with Yasmin you may experience vaginal bleeding, but it is normal, however you should consult your doctor. If you wear contact lenses and notice some disturbance or change in vision then you have to consult your doctor also. Yasmin may also cause swelling of the fingers and ankles and may increase your blood pressure. Your doctor need to be notified about it. Additionally spotty darkening of the skin is also possible, especially on the face. Changes in apetite, headaches, nervousness, depression and dizziness, loss of scalp hair, rash, and vaginal infections may also occur when treatment with Yasmin continues. You should consult your doctor about it.
Storage
Yasmin should be stored in temperatures no lower than 15 and not higher than 30°C (59°-86°F).
Overdose
In the case of overdose potassium and sodium concentration and evidence of metabolic acidosis should be monitored due to antimineralocortoidal properties of drospirenone. Other effects of overdose aren't very serious.
More Information
Before prescribing hormonal contraceptives your doctor need to examine your medical and family history and full examination. Examination may be postponed if your doctor believes it's appropriate, but examination should be performed at least once a year. This drug shouldn't be used for any other purposes than those for which it was prescribed. Prescription of this contraceptive is person specific, do not give this contraceptive to any other person. Smoking should be avoided while taking this contraceptive.
